Often mistaken for dry flies – these stiff-hackled WET flies are the Japanese tenkara angler’s secret weapon. They are easier to hold near the surface than softer-hackled flies and – most importantly – they will “grip” current flow in a way that lets you anchor your fly against the current. Probably the most versatile of patterns (you can sink them by finding currents that flow towards the riverbed for instance) – they can even be used a little bit like bass “poppers” because the stiffer disk of hackle will push water in front of the fly when it is pulsed.
