Our Loss of Tenkara Footage Rights Means Much of Our Library is Disappearing after Jan 31st

So if you're an email subscriber, you'll already have had a heads up on the loss of tenkara footage rights that we've been hit with (as well as a special 20% discount on downloading Discovering Tenkara Vol 3 until Monday 15th Jan 2018). This is a quick post to let you know which publications are affected - FOLLOWED BY A SUITABLY DIPLOMATIC EXPLANATION OF WHY THIS IS HAPPENING...

Also - keep reading because I'll be setting up a blanket 10% discount code on the titles and bundles that will expire on January 31st 2018 (a Wednesday if I've read my calendar right).

First of all here are the individual titles that will be disappearing (Download AND DVD):

Use the Code "kibosh" to get 10% off ALL EXPIRING DOWNLOADS FEATURED IN THIS POST until Jan 31st 2018 (PLUS - until Monday 15th Jan, you can get 20% off Discovering Tenkara Volume 3 with - because it is the perfect match to our print book: Click for £GBP version and use code "shutdown1" until Jan 15th OR Click for $USD and use code "shutdownv3")

  • Discovering Tenkara Volume 1 (Basics & Fundamentals): A little piece of tenkara history featuring JP and PG plus Dr Ishigaki. (Click for $USD or £GBP versions - with VAT if you order from a country where that tax is applied)

  • Discovering Tenkara Volume 2 (Japanese Kebari Patterns & Principles): Unique footage from Japan of in-depth interviews and fly tying  sequences from Dr Ishigaki, Masami (Tenkara no Oni) Sakakibara, Hirata san, Go Ishii and Makino (Himano) san - as well as PG and JP (Click for $USD or £GBP versions - with VAT if you order from a country where that tax is applied)

  • Discovering Tenkara Volume 3 (Japanese Kebari Practical Fishing Applications): Kazumi Saigo, Kazuo Kurahashi, Go Ishii, Tadashi Otani and Shōichi Saitō help you discover the secrets, traditions and sheer pleasure of understanding 'kebari' - the fishing flies of Japan (Click for $USD or £GBP versions - with VAT if you order from a country where that tax is applied)

By clicking on any of the above download links you can get a full description of exactly what you get in each publication.

The loss of products (and the 10% discount code) also applies to ANY AND ALL BUNDLES that any of the lost titles belong to. So, for example, the Megabundles or Ultimate kebari design and presentation bundles. You can find a full list of products here (and use your discount code "kibosh" before January 31st) here:

 https://gumroad.com/pgflyfishing

There are more products that will also be lost (I'll get to the story of why below) and these are:

Masami Sakakibara Tenkara no Oni Video and ebook Bundle product

PLUS:

PG Tenkara Manipulations Bundle

PLUS:

Dr Ishigaki Onstream Masterclass Video Download

Again, because there are many currency options and bundle-combinations associated with all of these, the best option (if you don't want the specific links in the above list) is to take your discount code "kibosh" and scroll through to the product you'd like to get before it disappears on this link:

 https://gumroad.com/pgflyfishing

The following titles are not affected and will continue to be sold as normal (and don't have the kibosh discount code applied):

Why are We Having to Lose so Much of Our Inventory?

I've had a lot of questions about whether it is relationships with people featured in the products that has caused this problem The answer to that is "No, definitely not". I don't want to get too bogged down in looking backwards, but for the sake of clarity, it boils down to a previous collaborator who ran the website and contributed footage (and worked on edits). Although demand for work on free and paid footage and website maintenance outstripped supply, our offer of continued "one third of proceeds" payments for the lifespan of products we'd already worked on together was rejected. Instead a payoff and then removal from sale/use products that contained his images and/or footage was negotiated before me and JP were able to work on projects as a pair.

Does this affect the Karasu Rods?

No! - Those are entirely separate from this problem.

What about Tenkara in Focus?

Obviously we've just had a huge chunk wiped off our assets value, so we are going to have to bust our asses to get new products lined up...

This is likely to slow down the rate that we can put out free episodes for a while. MASSIVE thanks to everyone who has supported the production and publication of the free episodes through opting in to Premium download content associated with the programme.

THIS INCLUDES YOUR SUPPORT ON THIS INVENTORY LIQUIDATION SALE - THANK YOU!

None of our projects could exist without you - and the tenkara community outside Japan would not benefit from the Free blogs and video content that your active support of our projects provides for us all.

Yes it is a massive shame that some genuinely historic events in our little tenkara world will now be lost from the publication record...The best that we can do is to try to carry on and continue to capture and share the best content that we are able to.

Please do use the social media buttons on this page to SHARE THIS LIQUIDATION SALE & STORY page, it will go some way towards improving our chances to continue what we do in tenkara. Also, I'll do my best to answer any questions and comments in the Comments section below,

Best wishes

Paul (Don't forget to SHARE, and Don't Miss your favourite download before it's gone forever)

PS - NTSC DVDs (physical copies) are available while the final batch of stock lasts from Chris at TenkaraBum: http://www.tenkarabum.com/discovering-tenkara-dvd.html

Paul,
This is none of my business so "no answer required". The obvious question is why did he not accept the payoff, as payment for his work, and then give you the rights to the footage? Seems reasonable, but then again, sometimes the best of us are unreasonable at times.

I appreciate all you and John do.

Thanks David, I can't really fathom it myself so I'd just be putting words in his mouth by venturing my own guess. Best to look forward and be glad that folks like yourself appreciate our efforts. Paul

What a massive shame that this has happened after so much work has been done and footage taken. I hope that you will all recover from it. I can only guess that it might be to do with Fish On somehow. Good luck whilst you gather yourselves and make a new plan to move forward. Life can throw a lot of shit at you at times. You just have to learn and bounce back .... stronger and wiser.

Hi Glyn, many thanks for your good wishes. I can only echo what JP said in answer to a Facebook question along similar lines which is that the two guys now running Fish On are in no way involved at all with this situation.
Very best wishes and thanks again,

Paul

Paul & JPís approach in public to this matter says it all about the two of them. In awe a little at how measured and professional you have kept it.

Will you be releasing the old content for free into public domain?

Paul Gaskell

Unfortunately we can't reuse or repurpose his footage in any way according to the terms of the settlement agreement. Giving it away for free is seen as us benefiting by improved profile/status.

so do I have to download already purchased gumroad products?

Paul Gaskell

I definitely would as a precaution Mike. I'd advise that even without the current problems actually (just to guard against any glitches in the Gumroad system that might happen). There should be a download link next to each product in your Gumroad library to help you make back up copies on your own system and external drives. The videos should actually play at higher quality when you download them too (compared to the Gumroad player).

Mate, as an Aussie I hate will always support the underdog. Itís in my cultural psyche. Post a link for donations please. Iíve bought all your products and canít afford much as a retiree but happy to help someone so nice who is struggling with what I can.

Iíve been pioneering Tenkara in this country for over a decade now. Iíve trekked the same route that some of your videos show only I had to work it out from first principles in the absence of guidance that is available now through you. I just wish I was young enough to go back up mountain to my roots or what the Japanese call ďgenryuĒ again. Never realised I was keiryu and genryu when I was doing it through the 60ís - 90ís, I just thought is was normal to fish in the mountains and go bush.

Paul/John,

After checking every offering on GumRoad and realizing I've purchased all your offerings, I would say to anyone thinking about purchasing any of this digital contemt I would highly recommend you do so before they are gone. I have really enjoyed these offering and have learned quite a bit from each of the proudcts. I realy hope you continue to have the opportunity to move forward and recover from this. It is ashame you guys are being held hostage with this situation but I fully approciate and understand your decision. Keep up the great work!
